Sunday fun day!

What do you do to take a break without breaking the bank?

We recently discovered that a local microbrewery here in Toledo does Sunday Funday $1.50 12 oz cans of fantastic beer.

So, this past Sunday we took the kids to check it out and got out of there for a whopping $9+ tax & tip or $15 for the two of us.

Here's Loki and Luca waiting for another treat since we were having ours in beverage form.

What's your retirement gonna look like?

Queer Money - Episode 436 show notes

Listen to (or watch) this week's Queer Money® on:

Does the thought of retirement keep you up at night? Not necessarily because of finances, but because you live alone and don’t have children to help take care of you?

Retirees who are aging alone or without family support are called solo agers, and because LGBTQ+ individuals are less likely to have children than our straight counterparts, many of us fall into this category.

But what if you could be single and child-free without being lonely? What if you could create your own ‘Golden Girls’ retirement?

Dr. Sara Zeff Geber is the Retirement Transition Coach behind Life Encore, a platform that helps people who have no children or are aging alone lead a safe, fulfilling life in their retirement years.

An expert in the realm of solo aging, Dr. Geber is the recipient of the 2018 Influencers in Aging designation and the author of Essential Retirement Planning for Solo Agers: A Retirement and Aging Roadmap for Single and Childless Adults.

On this episode of Queer Money, Dr. Geber joins us to explain how isolation impacts our health, challenging us to find a community and nurture intergenerational relationships as we get older.

Dr. Geber walks us through the six elements of a fulfilling life in our later years, describing how to see aging not as lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and growth.

Listen in for Dr. Geber’s insight on housing options for LGBTQ+ solo agers (in the US or abroad) and learn how to live your best life in retirement, staying mentally and physically fit as long as possible!

Topics covered:

  • Why having kids increases the likelihood of having family support in older age
  • Why so many people don’t plan for care as we age (even though 70% of us will need it)
  • Seeing aging not as lost youth but as a new stage of opportunity and growth
  • The relationship between living your best life until the end and belonging to a community
  • How isolation and loneliness impact our health as we get older
  • Dr. Geber’s advice on developing relationships with young people in your community
  • Dr. Geber’s 6 elements of a fulfilling life in your later years
  • The biggest challenges for solo agers when it comes to retirement planning
  • Dr. Geber’s insight on housing options for solo agers in the LGBTQ community
  • The pros and cons of retiring abroad and places with significant expat communities
  • Why Dr. Geber suggests long-term care insurance vs. counting solely on Medicare

Your Weekly Financial Independence Pro Tip:

Do you really want to reach financial independence?

What's holding you back from pursuing it?

When we look back at our days of being unconscious of our money, we realize all the mistakes in our thinking that were leading us in the opposite direction of where we wanted to go financially.

What we have discovered, not only with our experiences but with the hundreds of people we have coached and helped is that there are some basic thinking errors, and mindset mistakes that are common.

For some of these, just knowing that we're thinking this way is the beginning of uprooting those thoughts and thinking better.

We decided to document these thinking errors in one place, not only for our benefit but so we can share them with you.

Welcome to the 68 new readers this week! Queer Money now has 2,113 readers. A big welcome to all our new subscribers from the ROMBA conference. We're baaaack! We've taken a few weeks off to ponder and pivot in our personal and business lives. We needed a break and things have been a bit broken for us. One of the great things we did on our time off was to head up to Detroit for a live show, which we haven't been to in well over a year. It gave David a chance to dance. (He really is a dancing...
